To increase the use of ICT in Bangla, Ankur ICT Development Foundation (AIDF) has participated at BASIS SoftExpo 2012 from February 22-26, 2012. Ankur stall no was B-12. From the very beginning Ankur is localizing different types of Open Source Software in relation with Bangla language and culture. Among those there were localized Operating System, word Processor, Spreadsheet, Presentation tool, Email client, Internet browser and so on. To use the software in a easy and effective way Ankur prepared Bangla training manual for the user. Moreover, Ankur provided necessary training regarding Information, Communication and Technology to the teachers from different schools and the entrepreneur from different UISCs. Ankur achieved South Asian Manthan Award-2008 and National Digital Innovation Award-2010 and 2011. Actually Ankur participated Basis Soft Expo-2012 in order to increase the use of ICT in Bangladesh. The main theme of Ankur is Computer in Bangla for All. We could promote Bangla computing as well as the development of ICT through the event of Basis Soft Expo-2012. Besides this, live DVD of Bangla operating system named SHISHIR-2012, help guide for Bangla computing, a supplementary computer text book for grade IX-X following the national curriculum of Bangladesh published by AIDF will be helpful for the frequent use of ICT. Ankur conducting some research works on general usage of computer applications and trying to identify the suitable solutions for Bangladesh. Ankur is also working with Govt. and Education Sectors of Bangladesh. In that event near three thousand people meet the Ankur stall everyday.

Ankur ICT Development Foundation (AIDF) organized a program on inaugurate and training of Grade IX-X Computer Reference Text Book. The program held at BANBEIS (Bangladesh Bureau of Educational Information and Statistics) on 20-21st December 2011. Computer Teachers from different renowned schools participated in the program. The participants willingly accepted the book as reference and spontaneously provide their recommendation to further improvement. The participants also impressed to get a nice, colorful, and attractive computer book. At the closing session Ankur Chairperson Jamil Ahmed and General Secretary Mahay Alam Khan were also present. They deliver their valuable speech and participants were provided Certificate.

In order to increase the use of ICT in Bangla, Ankur ICT Development Foundation (AIDF) has participated at e-ASiA Fair from December 1-3, 2011. Ankur stall no was B-19. The main theme of Ankur for that event was Computer in Bangla for All. From the beginning Ankur is very optimistic about the prospect of Open Source Software in Bangladesh. Ankur published help guide for Bangla computing, CD of application software, DVD of Bangla operating system named SHISHIR and a supplementary computer text book for Grade IX-X. Which will help any one, who knows just Bangla. These materials will also help them to learn Bangla localized applications including OpenOffice.org, Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, Pidgin, VLC Media Player. Ankur conducting some research works on general usage of computer applications and trying to identify the suitable solutions for Bangladesh. Ankur is also working with Government and Education Sectors of Bangladesh. In that event Thousands of people meet the Ankur stall everyday and we hope distributed materials could promote Bangla computing as well as the development of ICT through Bangla Localized OpenSource Software.

On the occassion of Open Source Software Freedom Day 2011, Ankur organized a day long seminar on open source and career jointly with IER of Dhaka University on 26th September at 10am. The Director of IER Dr. Md. Abul Ehsan was present on the event as a chief guest. As special guest Dr. Mahbub Ahsan Khan, Assistant Professor and coordinator of IER and Mahay Alam Khan, General Secratery of Ankur ICT Development Foundation was also present at that time. Mahay Alam Khan present a in detail about What is Open Soucre, How can we familiar with it and how can we include it for our career development. Ankur organized the event for creating awareness about Open Source Software, its proper use and utilization in education, communication, technology and career development. About 100 participants were attend in that program. Most of the participants were students and teachers of IER,DU. NGO representative and media representative were also participate in that Seminar.

On the 27th of July 2011, Spanish Agency for Development and International Cooperation (AECID) Representative Ms.Teresa Labrador Lopez de Azcona, the Project Manager of Rural Development and Gender visited Ankur. It was her special visit to know about the activity of Ankur and oversee the project of Empowerment of Women through the use of ICT in Bangladesh.During her visit Mr. Javier Sola- President of WordForge Foundation, Mahay Alam Khan-General Secretary of Ankur were also present and discuss in detail about the project. Teresa has also spent her specious time with the Training, Development and Localization Team to know the detail work of Ankur like: OpenOffice.org, Mozilla Firefox, Bangla Spell Checker, Bangla Operating system-Ubuntu etc. Ankur also handover her the ICT Based publication, Training Manual and Bangla localized software-CD.Teresa appreciated the noble work of Ankur for developing ICT in education in Bangladesh and also suggested to spread the work at grassroots level.

On the 24th of July 2011 held a Computer Distributing Program and Bangla Computing Training Activity with Secondary High School at Rangamati District. It held with joint collaboration of Ankur ICT Development Foundation (AIDF) and WordForge Foundation. Local organization Trimatrik organized the program and cooperate to disseminate 47 computers among the Shah Bahumukhi High School and Shahid Abdul Ali Academy of Rangamati. To spread the knowledge of Computer and ICT in Education these computers were supported by Ankur and WordForge Foundation. In the inauguration session Mr. Javier Sola-President of WordForge Foundation, Md. Musa-UP Chairman, Mushfiqur Rahman-Trainer of Ankur, Chief of Trimatrik, Teachers and Media representative were present. After the session Javier Sola handover Bangla Localized Software-CD and Training Manual to the school represetative which were developed by Ankur. It was three a days training session of Ankur where 30 Girls, 30 Boys and 10 teachers participated. Ankur trained them on Bangla Localized Software like: OpenOffice.org, Mozilla Firefox, Bangla Localized operating system-Ubuntu etc.

Ministry of Science and ICT, Government of Peoples Republic of Bangladesh (MoSICT) awarded Ankur the National Digital Innovation Award 2011, under the Science & Technology for it's Bangla Spell Checker. The Ministry and D.net jointly arranged the Ceremony. The Event was held on July 07 at 6 pm at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Novo Theatre, Tejgoan, Dhaka. Honorable Finance Minister Mr. Abul Maal Abdul Muhith was present as the Chief Guest. The programme was presiding over by Md. Nazrul Islam Khan, PS-1 to Prime Minister and National Project Director of Access to Information Programme, Prime Minister’s Office. Dr. Rafiqul Islam Ph.D, Secretary, ICT Division, Ministry of Science & ICT, Government of the Peoples’ Republic of Bangladesh; Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Eminent educationist and Chairperson, Jury Board of National Digital Innovation Award 2011 and Dr. Toufic Ahmad Choudhury, Chairperson, Governing Body of D.Net was present at the occasion. Access to Information Programme (A2I), Prime Minister’s Office was the principal partner of this contest.

Ankur ICT Development Foundation launched a pilot implementation project of Bangla localized applications at UISC, Paikora, Kalihati, Tangail on 1st March, 2011. To explore the effectiveness of Bangla localized applications at the UISCs Ankur starts this pilot project. In this lunching program there were present Mr. Mahbub Alam, ADC General, Tangail, Mr Hasan Imam khan, Chairman, Upazilla Parishad, Kalihati, Mr. Afzal Hossain Molla, Chairman, Paikora Union and Mr. Mamun-Ul-Hasan, UNO, Kalihati. At the event there also present Mahay Alam Khan, General Secretary, Ankur, Mahbub Ul Huda, Project Manager and Mushfiqur Rahman, Ankur training team. From Access to Information Programme, Prime Minister's office Mr. Asad Uz Zaman was also present at that event. Ankur started the pilot projects in 10 UISCs arround the country and already trained the entrepreneurs by organizing an workshop on Bangla Computing on 22-24 February, 2011 at Dhaka.

An workshop on "Bangla Computing" held on 22-23 February 2011 at CAMPE, Dhaka. The workshop organized by Ankur ICT Development Foundation in collaboration with Access to Information Programme, Prime Minister's office. Ankur organized this workshop as a part of their Pilot implementation of Bangla Computing in UISCs project. To explore the effectiveness of Bangla localized applications at the UISCs Ankur starts this piloting project. where they implement Bangla localized applications at 10 UISCs around the country. In this workshop 12 UISC entrepreneurs from different districts has been participated and learned how to use the Bangla application such as OpenOffice.org, Firefox, Pidgin etc in Bangla operating system "Shisir". At the end of the workshop Ankur handover the laptops with Bangla environment and Internet modems to each of UISC representatives to use these equipment during the piloting.

Ankur ICT Development Foundation released a disc with recent version of Bangla localized applications with Bangla manuals at BASIS Softexpo 2011. Ankur also released an Ubuntu based live OS Disc called "Shisir". Live OS was available in DVD and USB. Ankur distribute that discs and other gifts to visitors at BASIS SoftExpo on 1-5th February from their stall B-62. With this manuals any one who knows just Bangla can learn Bangla localized applications including OpenOffice.org, Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, Pidgin, VLC Media Player. Ankur is very optimistic about the prospect of Open Source Software in Bangladesh. They conduct some research works on general usage of computer applications and try to identify the required features and suitable solutions for Bangladesh. According to these identifications Ankur made some localize applications and their manuals which are ready to distribute. This year Ankur also released a typing tutor for Bangla typing method with Probhat and Jatiya keyboard layout. The typing tutor will help people to enhance their capacity to type Bangla at their computer.

Mozilla automatically updates your Bangla Spell Checker

You'll be prompted to update your existing extension automatically

Ankur's Bangla Spell Checker Extension for Mozilla products is updated with almost 400,000 words now. Earlier the spell checker had 300,000 words. The spell cehcker extension can be downloaded form both Mozilla and Ankur site. Those who have installed the earlier versions in their mozilla products (FireFox, Thunderbird, SeaMonkey) will be offered automatically to upgrade. The spell checker have been download 21,000 times from the mozilla addons site with an weekly download of more than 500 times. This lates version have more corrected words. Ankur is planning to add more correct words in future.

Ministry of Science and ICT, Government of Peoples Republic of Bangladesh (MoSICT) awarded Ankur as a Champion under the e-Localization Category for the first National e-Content and ICT for Development Award 2010 (eAward). The Ministry and D.net jointly arranged the contest. It held in 14 categories both for on-line and off-line content products and ICT interventions and applications. There were total 93 nominations, 48 finalist and 32 winners. The Contest is endorsed by World Summit Award. Award giving ceremony held at the National Museum on August 9, 2010. Honorable Finance Minister Abul Mal Abdul Muhith attended as the chief guest while State Minister for Science and ICT Architect Yeafesh Osman was the special guest.

Ankur ICT Development Foundation supporting a Training for Teachers program collaboratively organized by D.Net, Computer Jagat and Standard Chartered Bank. The Training has been start on 30th May 2010 at the premises of D.Net and will end on 5th June 2010. Participants of the training program are school teachers from 14 schools from all over the country. The Training has organized under the program Computer Learning Center (CLC), and after completing the training program all participated schools will be equipped with 5 computers each and other logistics to establish computer learning centers.

A training (TOT) on Bangla Computing has been held at Tajpur, Balagonj, Sylhet on 26-29 April, 2010 organized by Ankur ICT Development Foundation in collaboration with a local GPCIC named Manna IT Institute. UNO of Balagonj Upazilla Mr. Rafiqul Alam has inaugurate the training program on 26th April. In inauguration there was also present Mr. Mahay Alam Khan, General Secretary, Ankur ICT Development Foundation, Suhel Ahmed Chowdhury, CEO of Manna IT Institute and training team from Ankur. In this four day long training participants has learned about various Bangla localized Open-Source application including OpenOffice.org, Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, Pidgin. Ankur distribute the training materials and Certificate of Participation to all the participants who has successfully complete the training.

“Computer for all through cost effective Bangla Open source Software” titled 4 days Training session held at Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science & Technology University (HSTU), Dinajpur from 18th April to 21st April 2010. Community Development Association (CDA) and Ankur ICT development foundation jointly organized this training. Professor md. Ruhul Amin, Dean of Computer Science and Engineering of HSTU was the chief guest of the inauguration ceremony, Professor Dr. Balram Roy, Director, Institute of Research and Training (IRT) of HSTU was the special guest and Shah I Mobin Jinnah, Executive Director of CDA was also present at the inauguration ceremony. The Chief guest said in his speech that we have to make ICT universal if we want to develop Digital Bangladesh and it is impossible to make ICT universal if it is not in Bangla. Professor Dr. Balram Roy said we are not independent in language yet because we have obligations to use ICT on English. Executive Director, CDA described about works of CDA and encouraged the participants to practice of ICT in Bangla for social development. Mr. Mahay Alam Khan General Secretary Ankur ICT development foundation described about Ankur and objectives of the training course. Mr. Belayet Hossain, Training Coordinator of Ankur facilitated the 4 day training. 25 participants from different educational institute, university teachers, students, telecentre practitioner are participated in the training course.

Workshop on Innovations in Education Festival at Netrokona

ICTs are transforming teaching and learning processes from being highly teacher-dominated to student-centered. This transformation will result in increased learning gains for students, creating and allowing for opportunities for learners to develop their creativity, problem-solving abilities, informational reasoning skills, communication skills, and other higher-order thinking skills. To address this transformation D.Net (Development Research Network) undertook initiative called “Innovations in Education” program. 27 and 28 March, 2010, D.Net has been organized two days Innovations in Education Festival at Netrokona, in collaboration with Intel, Netrokona District Administration and D.Net's local partner ARBAN. In this two days workshop Mr. Mahay Alam Khan, General Secretary, Ankur ICT Development Foundation were present. Mahay Alam Khan, general secretary of Ankur presented on their products, current development works on Bangla computing and about Training on Computer for All Through Cost Effective Bangla Open source Software.

New Verson of Bangla Spell Checker released

Recently Ankur ICT Development Foundation released Bangla manuals for Bangla localized computer applications. With this manuals Recently Ankur ICT Development Foundation released new version [v0.04] of unicode supported Bangla spell checker add-on for Mozilla Firefox, Thunderbird, SeaMonkey and OpenOffice.org. In this version Ankur include more than 300,000 Bangla words where previous one [v0.02] had only 100,000 words. So the new spell checker is now able to work with better accuracy.

Mozilla Bangla Thunderbird 3.0 released

On 8th December 2009 Mozilla Foundation has released new version of open source based email client “Thunderbird 3.0”. Its all yours. New Thunderbird is faster, flexible and more secure. For simplification in code, stability, web compatibility and better performance the version has been changed in main architecture. Some new features has been added, among them are Tab Based Email Search, Advance Email Search and Filtering, Activity Manager, New Add-ones Manager, New Message Summary View. Moreover it has Advanced Security and Protection System. With contributions of Ankur, Thunderbird 3.0 has released in Bangla. So Thunderbird can be used in Bangla with all its functionalities. WordForge presented in FOSS.in/2009, Bangalore Muhammad Rezwan Shahid rafi the in-house Ankur Developer presented this year in FOSS.in at Bangalore. He presented the WordForge localization editor in the Main talk session on 4th December 2009. It was a nice presentation with a welcoming audience; experts from different language appreciated WordForg and it's feature over other localization editors. Some of them downloaded and started testing the beta 0.7; and promised to send us feedback.

Bangla localized Firefox 3.5 release party

We have fully localized the Mozilla Firefox (version 3.5) into Bangla(Bangladesh), along with this we have developed a Bangla Spell Checker consist of 100,000 unique words. To celebrate this occasion, Ankur is arranging a release party supported by Mozilla foundation with swags and Presidency University with a place to host the party. There will be a lightening talk on Firefox 3.5 features and demonstration of Bangla spell checker. The party is open; join us to get Mozilla swags.

It is our pleasure to inform you that Bangla OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 has been released, which is based on the original source code of OpenOffice.org 3.1.x.

Pidgin, the universal Instant Messenger client released with 100% Bangla Translation

Pidgin 2.5.3 is released with 100% Bangla translation, done by us. So from now on you can use Pidgin fully with Bangla interface. You can check some screen shots from our gallery.

Ankur won Manthan Award 2008 for E-Localisation

Ankur won the prestigious "Manthan Award 2008" in E-Localisation Category for it's Ubuntu Based Bangla Localised GNU/Linux Distribution "Hoimonti/হৈমন্তী".
